Sacramento DUI Campaign Nets Hundreds of Arrests

The figures are in and Sacramento’s New Year’s DUI arrest campaign netted nearly 250 arrests, including 60 people arrested on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day throughout the county. A recent report mapped the spread of these arrests, with the majority occurring near the downtown area.
The anti-DUI campaign spanned a two-week period leading up to New Year’s Day. This time is traditionally one in which many drivers are attending holiday parties or other events and are on the roads afterwards. Law enforcement officials know that the chances of finding drunk drivers are much higher during this time of year, so they tend to step up law enforcement, including saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints. Overall, police arrested more than 400 people in the period from Thanksgiving to New Year’s for DUI.
What Can I Do To Avoid A DUI?
While the recent holiday season was prime time for a DUI arrest, you can actually be arrested for driving under the influence any day of the year. The holidays are not the only time the police set up roadblocks, and an officer can pull you over at any time for erratic driving, breaking a minor traffic law or other questionable driving behavior. If the officer has probable cause to test you for DUI, California law gives the officer that right.
Therefore, the easiest way to avoid a DUI is simply not to drive when you have been drinking. You cannot be arrested for DUI if you are not driving a vehicle, including a bicycle, motorcycle or other wheeled conveyance. Choose a designated driver for your group who will not drink at all. That person can then safely transport everyone home after a party or from a bar or restaurant.
On the other hand, there are times when you may not have a designated driver or when you may not be able to avoid finding your own way home. When this happens, it is best to call a friend or a cab. Many Sacramento bars will gladly call a cab for you if you need one, and there are even phone apps now that allow you to contact a taxi service and arrange a pickup right from your keypad.
