Fatal Sacramento Off-Ramp Crash Raises Questions
Posted on Thursday, March 13th, 2014
Authorities arrived at the scene of an accident at the 26th Street off-ramp recently to find rising billows of smoke and a driver trapped inside a vehicle, according to reports. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was described only as a 45-year-old.
The accident occurred very early in the morning, according to the California Highway Patrol, when the driver of a Nissan 350Z went up an embankment and hit a concrete pillar beneath a bridge. The impact badly damaged the car and trapped the driver inside. Police believe speed was a factor in the accident, but are also asking any witnesses who may have seen the accident occur to come forward and give information.
High-Speed Crashes Often Fatal
The chances of fatality go up as speed increases in a vehicle. According to a 2011 report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is considered to be a contributing factor in about one-third of all fatal traffic accidents. Speeding is defined as traveling faster than the posted speed limit. The more the driver exceeds the speed limit, the more dangerous it may be for that driver as well as everyone else on the road.
However, high-speed crashes are not always the fault of a careless driver. There have been many instances in which a driver who was alone in the vehicle was killed in a high-speed crash and a study of the wreckage revealed that the accelerator was stuck or that some other mechanical failure led to the crash. This is especially true recently with the Sudden Unintended Acceleration cases against several large car manufacturers. It is critical that anyone who is involved in a high-speed crash find out the truth about what really caused the crash before blame can be assigned to any one driver or factor.
