California Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Sex Crimes
Posted on Friday, November 28th, 2014
A California man was sentenced to ten years for transporting a teenaged girl across state lines for sexual purposes, according to a recent report. Nicholas Wessel, 38, of Richmond, was sentenced to ten years for his actions in communicating with a teenaged girl on Facebook and by texting before arranging to pick her up in Modesto. He took the girl, who was 14, to his home and engaged in sexual activity before transporting her across state lines to Reno and having sex with her at a hotel.
Child Sex Crimes Are Most Serious
While any sex crime is a very serious matter, sex crimes involving children are the most serious and often result in the longest jail terms and most severe penalties. Child sex crimes can be divided into two major groups:
- Physical crimes, such as rape, including statutory rape, fondling and battery.
- Emotional crimes, such as enticing or threatening.
While most people think of sexual crimes as physical, many emotional or mental crimes are committed against children as well. This leads to an issue that can result in serious repercussions for anyone accused of a child sex crime: the burden of proof for an emotional crime may be far less strict than that of a physical one. With a physical crime there is usually some type of physical evidence to back up the victim’s story. However, if a child accuses an adult of sexual speech, threats or other emotional manipulation, it may well be the child’s word against the adult’s.
While most children never lie about such things, there have been cases in which a frightened child has been coerced into an accusation of sexual misconduct against an adult when the reality was very different. This is most common in cases in which a trusted adult pushes the child to make such an accusation, as when a disgruntled ex-spouse coaches the child to accuse the father or a boyfriend of sexual advances. In these cases, it may be difficult to prove the adult’s guilt, but the mere accusation can destroy a person’s reputation quickly, even if there is never a conviction.
