Busted! Sacramento County Arrests More than 400 in DUI Operation

Posted on Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Sacramento County law enforcement reports that the operation known as “Avoid the 17” netted more than 400 arrests for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  The numbers are expected to increase as more agencies continue to report their arrest numbers.

For those who have been arrested for DUI, good legal representation is a must.  Amerio Law can provide help and support for those who have been arrested for this crime and may be able to help the person accused of DUI fight the charges or work out a beneficial plea agreement.

“Avoid The 17” Targets Holiday DUIs

The winter mobilization targeting DUIs in Sacramento is known as “Avoid the 17,” a reference to the 17 law enforcement agencies involved in the operation.  For 20 days from December 13 to January 1, the county’s law enforcement agencies set up roadblocks and use saturation patrols to target drivers who may be operating under the influence of alcohol.

During the 2012-2013 holiday season, 375 arrests were made over 19 days with one fatal accident being attributed to DUI during that time.  This year, arrests were up to 414 with two fatalities blamed on drunk driving.

More sweeps are planned for Super Bowl Sunday in February and St. Patrick’s Day in March.

Do DUI Checkpoints Work?

Research shows mixed results for DUI checkpoints.  Some studies say that they remove impaired drivers from the road while others claim that they are not a deterrent to DUI and that saturation patrols are far more effective.  Checkpoints also have mixed reviews when it comes to cost savings.  One National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA study concluded that sobriety checkpoints can save up to $6 for every $1 spent.  However, other studies show a very high “per arrest” cost compared to other forms of enforcement.

DUI checkpoints have also been challenged on the basis of their constitutionality.  Some people feel that these measures are forbidden by civil rights amendments, but the courts have continually upheld their legality.

If you have been arrested for DUI, it is very important that you protect your rights and secure proper legal representation.  Amerio Law offers complete legal services for anyone accused of a DUI, from initial arrest to representation in court during a trial.  In many cases, Amerio attorneys are able to help those who are facing DUI charges have the charges dismissed or negotiate a favorable plea that minimizes the penalties.
