According to recent reports, an unidentified 18-year-old motorcycle rider was killed by a hit-and-run driver in North Sacramento. The crash occurred at Frienza Avenue and Del Paso Boulevard when a white van struck a motorcycle. The driver left the van at the scene and fled on foot.
The motorcycle rider was rushed to a local hospital but died of his injuries. Police are asking anyone who may have seen the accident or who might have information about the driver to contact the Sacramento Police Department.
California Motorcycle Crashes: Deadly Serious
California motorcycle accidents are relatively common occurrences and many of these accidents result in serious physical injury for the motorcycle riders. According to the California Highway Patrol, motorcycle fatalities increased by 175 percent from 1998 to 2008. This increase occurred despite a significant reduction in traffic fatalities overall.
California actually experienced a decline in the number of motorcycle deaths between 1986 and 1999. However, the numbers began to increase in 1999 and peaked around 2008. Motorcycle victims are overrepresented in fatality numbers of traffic accidents. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that motorcycle riders are 28 times more likely to die than other vehicle occupants.
Motorcyclist accidents are also more deadly for younger riders and males. Men represent 90 percent of all motorcycle fatalities, and victims between 15 and 24 represent about 13 percent of all motorcycle fatalities. Younger drivers statistically tend to take more chances, speed more often and drink before riding, all factors that contribute to a high level of motorcycle crashes and fatalities. However, many motorcycle accidents are not the fault of the rider but of a driver who fails to yield the right-of-way.
