Sacramento and California July Fourth DUI Control Efforts
Posted on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014
Sacramento law enforcement as well as law enforcement throughout the state was out in full force over the July 4th weekend, patrolling for drunk drivers in the hopes of minimizing accidents, injuries, and deaths.
Avoid the 17
“Avoid the 17” DUI Task Force was created through the partnership of all 17 Sacramento County law enforcement agencies to stop drunk drivers on the July Fourth holiday weekend. From July 3rd at 6 p.m. to July 6th at 11:59 p.m., law enforcement operated the Independence Day Maximum Enforcement Period. This means that during this allotted time, law enforcement, including the California Highway Patrol, deployed a larger number of officers than usual. These officers enforced speeding, seatbelt, and DUI laws. Operating checkpoints from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. throughout Sacramento, local law enforcement hoped to get drunk drivers off the roads safely.
Last year, 56 persons were killed in California due to vehicular collisions over the Fourth of July weekend. Another 1500 persons were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This year, officers hoped the number would be smaller. Unfortunately, California Highway Patrol officer Martin Oliveros stated that DUIs were up 22 percent this year compared with 2013. Part of this increase could be due to the July Fourth holiday falling on a weekend. According to Chris Cochran of the Office of Traffic Safety, “Friday and Saturday are the highest DUI nights every week, but if you throw a holiday in on it, being a long weekend, I would expect to see DUIs really heading up.”
