SigAlert Issued After Multi-Vehicle Crash

Posted on Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

A San Diego man is under arrest for suspicion of DUI after he crashed into two vehicles and came to rest on top of a power pole, according to reports. The crash occurred near La Jolla High School and left debris strewn for several blocks.

The driver as well as a mother and her two children were transported to area hospitals for treatment of undisclosed injuries. It is unclear if the mother and her children were passengers in one of the cars, pedestrians or even in the car with the driver.

Statistics Of DUI Charges In California

In 2012, there were 1,066 DUI fatalities in California and more than 16,615 DUI injuries. These numbers represent 39 percent of the total traffic fatalities for that year and 7 percent of all injuries. Clearly, intoxicated drivers pose a risk to themselves and others on the highway, and a DUI conviction therefore carries extreme penalties.

The costs of a DUI charge can amount to thousands of dollars. Costs include fees for traffic school, increases in insurance, license reinstatement fees, fines, towing and storage of the vehicle and other expenses. According to the California DMV, over the past five years there has been a steady increase in DUI charges and DUI-related accidents.

The public has put tremendous pressure on law enforcement and prosecutors to stop drunk driving. Therefore, if you are pulled over and a police officer believes you have been drinking, it is very likely that you will be given a chemical test to reveal your blood alcohol level. The results of this test may determine if you are charged with DUI.
