Police Expand Surveillance Camera Technology
Posted on Wednesday, February 25th, 2015
Sacramento police do not have many surveillance cameras in place throughout the city, but they claim that those they have installed have made the metropolis a safer place, according to recent reports. The five installed security cameras are equipped with flashing blue lights and are installed at locations including Meadowview Road and Freeport Boulevard; Truxel Road and Gateway Park Boulevard; Mack Road and Center Parkway Lane; Third and I Streets; and Capitol Mall and Front Street. The cameras allow police to review any activity that occurs at these major intersections, including license plate information that may lead officers to stolen vehicles as well as possible missing persons. Police also claim that the presence of these cameras can act as a deterrent to crime at major intersections.
Some people, however, have concerns about privacy and wonder what the information on the cameras could be used for. Although police say that they only keep data for a month and only use it if needed for the investigation or prosecution of case, critics are not sure.
What About My Right To Privacy?
The right to individual privacy must always be balanced against the public good, but every person is afforded certain rights under the Constitution which cannot be violated. For example, police officers are not allowed to randomly target people for searches without evidence. They are also not allowed to use evidence obtained in certain ways to make a criminal case against a person. Under some circumstances, using surveillance footage to pursue a criminal charge can be considered a violation of these rights.
If you believe your rights have been violated or that you have been arrested unfairly, it is important to speak with an attorney about the matter. Criminal defense attorneys stand up for the rights of those who are accused of crimes and help them achieve fair treatment in the court system. Because the laws surrounding Constitutional rights are so complicated, many people need an attorney to help them protect these important rights.
