WALK Sacramento: Preventing Pedestrian Accident Injuries and Deaths
School is back in session! That means that your child, whether they are a first grader or a senior, is starting to make a daily habit out to walk to and from their school, bus stops, after-school activities, sports, maybe their friends’ houses, or even to their after school programs and own homes. With more people (specifically more children) on the streets, it is extremely likely that a pedestrian accident and/or injury could occur. In fact, unintentional pedestrian injuries are one of the top five causes of injury-related deaths in the United States for children ages 5 to 19. Teenagers are the greatest risk in these cases.
Research shows that in the United States alone, on average, a pedestrian is killed every two hours and injured every seven minutes in traffic collisions. Unfortunately, these numbers prove that pedestrians were one of the very few groups on the road to experience an increase in fatalities in the United States. Thankfully, these disturbing statistics are getting the right attention! The US Department of Transportation has made the proper tools and other funds available for communities to combat pedestrian accidents.
