An 82-year-old motorist struck and injured two Woodland High School students as they crossed Beamer Street via a crosswalk while trying to get to class, according to recent reports.
Rebecca Ayon of Woodland struck sisters Evelyne and Devina Alvarez as they attempted to cross the road. The incident happened just before 8:00am; Ayon stated that her vision was hindered due to the morning sun being in her eyes.
The two girls were taken to UC Berkeley Hospital, though police have not released details about their injuries.
According to school officials, the crosswalk has had its share of car accidents. They say that such accidents have led them to consider the safety of this particular crosswalk and how it could be improved. Principal Michelle Seijas has stated that there should be a walk/don't walk sign at the intersection. However, there are no plans to install such safety measures at this time.
Seijas acknowledges that it is often difficult for motorists to see pedestrians at the intersection.
Pedestrians are defined as any person on foot, sitting or lying down who is involved in a motor vehicle traffic collision.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA reports an increase in pedestrian fatalities in the United States in recent years. 2010 saw a four percent increase from a year before. Pedestrian fatalities increased by over three percent in 2011. The agency reports that nationwide, a pedestrian was killed every two hours and another injured every seven minutes from being struck by moving vehicles.
Last year, the NHTSA launched a program across the country aimed at improving pedestrian safety. A specified 22 cities could receive up to $2 million in federal grants for use by traffic safety education and law enforcement. The agency also maintains information about how pedestrians can avoid injuries, such as by walking in groups.
